Healthy Chicken and Tofu Wonton Soup for Dinner

The first time I ate wonton soup was 6 years ago after being introduced by my fiancee (now my husband). At that time we had our lunch in a Halal Cantonese restaurant in Amcorp Mall. I have never interested to try this amazingly delicious and full of surprised dishes before in view of my family unadventurous desire to try other than Malay dishes. Hehehe...

I've fall in love with wonton based dishes during my first food adventure. We both love eating and enjoy exploring new cuisine and dishes.

But..I'd love to experiment more than just hunting food outside!

I made a lot of reading and research about making the wonton, from the skin and how the filling is made. Most of the original recipes offer non-halal ingredient for the filling which the main ingredient is minced pork.. So...this is how I am going to do an experiment for my wonton filling so that we are not going to spend our money buying wonton soup from the restaurant ever again and the most important this is to maintain its delicious and juicy taste. Ehemm...

Actually, I've successfully made my wonton soup for several times but only managed to have it posted in my blog this time..Huhu..

For this time, I made 2 different types of wonton filling. The chicken filling and the tofu filling. I've never tried making the filling by using tofu, but it's worth trying, right? AND the result...it is not disappointing! Fuhh...For those who are on vegan diet you can always use tofu as chicken/meat substitutes.

So now, lets get back to our main point.. For the wonton skin if you don't wish to spend your time to make it on your own, it can be found conveniently in local store such as Giant, Tesco and hypermarket. It is square in shape..which differentiate it from dumpling or gyoza skin which is round shaped.

So, the ingredients are:

For chicken filling:

  • wonton skin
  • 1 boneless chicken (minced)
  • 1 garlic (peeled and minced)
  • 1/2 cm ginger (minced) - I didn't put)
  • 2 tablespoons of light soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of white pepper (optional- I didn't put)
  • about 3 cm of carrot (minced) (optional)
  • scallions/ green onions (minced)
Wonton filling ingredients

So..for the filling preparations all you have to do is to combine all the ingredients and mix well..Pretty easy, right? Eheh..

I've never like the taste of ginger to be added in my wonton, so I decided to never add in the ginger.

For tofu filling, the ingredients are all same as of the chicken filling. Please ensure to use hard tofu as it is firmer and easier to handle. Mashed the tofu well before adding the other ingredients.

You can add a little bit (about 1 tablespoon ) of egg white to the mix just to make the mashed tofu stick together. (I was lazy to use egg white, so I just add about 2 tablespoon of corn flour to it.)

You can use your own creativity to wrap your wonton, the easiest way is to just bring all the tips of the wonton wrapper to the center and pinch using your finger to seal the wrapper tightly.

Prepare a pot that is large enough to boil all the wontons. Bring the water to boil, put in the wonton and cook until the wonton emerge to the surface.

Once the wonton is ready,  immediately transfer the cooked wonton in the container sprayed with a little bit of cooking oil to prevent the wonton from sticking to each other.

Please remember to keep the wonton broth for making the soup.

The wonton is ready!

NOTE#

Store bought wonton wrapper is drier,  you may have difficulties to seal the wrapper. What you can do is to wet slightly with water all wrapper's edges using small cooking brush.

Wonton Soup:

For the soup, add chicken stock and and salt to taste. And that's it!

How to serve wonton soup:

Place the cooked wonton in a bowl and pour the soup. Sprinkle green onion on top.

So now the wonton soup is ready!

You can also enjoy the soup with bird's eye chilli pepper, chopped and mix in light soysauce.

Bon Appetit! :)
