Apple Pie Recipe (Copycat McD's Apple Pie)
I always love apple pie. I have to admit that apple pie is so irresistible that I can't stop eating after one bite.
The famous apple pie is the McDonald's apple pie. It is so delicious baked freshly with flaky and crispy pie crust filled with cinnamon flavored creamy apple filling. Oh my Gosh! It warms the heart and fill everybody's heart with joy after having bites of this flavorful pie. So, whenever we buy McD takeouts, we never forget to order apple pies and reserve the pies later for our teatime, enjoy them with a cup of tea while watching our favorite show, Running Man. That's how we live our life right now, much simpler and we both love to spend most of our free time at home rather than going on for outings, unless there's something we need to buy. Since we both love to enjoy our favorite food, making them ourselves is better rather than just buying them outside.
I made this apple pie yesterday, a day after we bought a packet of ready made puff pastry from baking store in Section 13, Shah Alam. I have never made my own McD style apple pie before except for apple crumble pie, the easiest version of apple pie. Hehe..But unfortunately, my hubby didn't seem to like it much due to it's crumbly texture. So, I've never attempt to make any apple pie since that.
Actually, I was thinking of making something delicious with few apples left that have already been sitting quietly inside my fridge for quite some times. That's how the idea to make my own apple pie came out from my mind. It 's been raining cats and dogs frequently in our area and we don't usually eat a lot of fruits during cold weather. That's the reason why my apples left untouched.
Initially, I wanted my apple pie to be in rectangular shaped, exactly the same as McD's. Unfortunately, the baking store which I went run out of square shaped puff pastry and the only available pastry sheet is the circular shaped one. I was lazy to make my own puff pastry, my first trial to make my own puff pastry sheet last time was a complete disaster! Until I am ready for the next challenge, I will just use ready made pastry sheets.
Since I used the store bought pastry sheets, I skip the pastry making sheet part. The only thing that I need to prepare was the apple filling making. I used Fuji apples instead of Granny Smith apples, the green colored apples they used to make apple pie filling.
Before you start preparing your apple filling, you need to defrost your store bought pastry sheets at least 3 hours at room temperature before you can use them. Just be sure not to let your pastry sheets reach the room temperature. They must be slightly cool to touch so they are much easier to handle.
The ingredients for apple filling:
3 medium sized Fuji apples
1/4 cup of sugar
1 tablespoon of butter
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 tablespoon of corn flour
1 cup of water
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
Methods:
- Peel the apples's skin and cut into small cubes.
- Heat a non-stick pan. Add in butter, apple cubes, sugar and salt. Stir to combine the ingredients and cook over medium heat until the mixture is boil and the apples start to soften.
- Mix corn flour with little bit of water and add in to the apple mixture together with cinnamon powder and the remaining water. Cover and continue to cook until the apple texture is soft. I added a lot of water to cook my apple mixture because I wanted my apple filling to be mushy as the McD's apple filling.
- Let the filling cool at least 15 minutes.
Making the Apple Pies Using Round Shaped Puff Pastry
To assemble the apple pies, place your pastry sheets on a floured work surface. Flatten them a bit using a rolling pin, just to make them slightly wider and thinner.

Preheat oven to 200'C for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, slice 3 slashes across top of each apple pies using a knife. Then brush the top with egg. Bake the apple pies for about 25 minutes, until puffed and golden brown. Let them cool on a wire rack and serve warm.
If you want to deep fry your apple pies, refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before deep frying your apple pies.
I felt slightly disappointed as my apple doesn't exactly look like the McD's rectangular shaped but instead they look like the empada, or curry puff. Fortunately, my apple pie turn out to be so yummy with creamy caramelized apple filling! Yay!
You can store your unbaked apple pies in freezer in a sealed container for up to 3 months. You can directly bake or deep fry your apple pies without having them defrost.
Enjoy! |
Try making your own apple pies with these simple steps. Good luck!
